What’s involved on the car practical driving test and how to book your driving test in Leeds. The car practical driving test is designed to see if you can safely control the car and are competent in a variety of road and traffic conditions. You have to demonstrate a knowledge of the Highway Code through your driving. How to book your driving test.
What documents to bring
You must bring your valid driving licence:
- the photocard
You must bring your signed driving licence and a valid passport if you have an old-style paper licence.
What happens on the test
You will have to read a number plate from a distance of:
- 20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate
- 20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate
Show me, tell me
At the start of the test you will be asked a safety check question about how you would check a component of the vehicle. You will be asked another simpler question while you are driving to demonstrate how to operate an auxiliary control.
The driving part of the test will last for roughly 40 minutes. Your examiner will assess your ability to drive safely and competently. He will give you directions to follow which will cover various road and traffic situations. It should also include normal stops, a hill start and an angled start from behind a parked vehicle. You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop.
You will be asked to perform one reversing manoeuvre from the following:
- parallel park
- bay park
- right hand pull up and reverse
About 20 minutes of the driving test are set for independent driving. Your sense of direction and navigation skills are NOT what is being tested. The driving test examiner will ask you to follow signs or you will follow a SatNav independently. Going the wrong way wont affect your driving test result.
The examiner will ask ask you to switch off the engine and they will tell you if you have been successful or not. You will pass the test if you have driven safely and competently throughout. This means making 15 or fewer driving faults, and no serious or dangerous faults.
- dangerous fault – involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property
- serious fault – could potentially be dangerous
- driving fault – not potentially dangerous
If you pass the examiner will give you a driving test pass certificate and ask if you want your new licence sent to you.
How to book your driving test in Leeds
Always book your driving test through the official website. You must have passed the theory test to book the practical test. You will need your driving licence number and a credit or debit card to book the driving test. You can use your instructors personal reference number to check their availability.
Driving test fees are:
- £62 weekday
- £75 Weekday evening (4:30pm onwards), weekend and bank holiday
The Leeds driving test centres are Harehills and Horsforth. Both centres usually have a 6-8 week waiting list for driving tests. There are often cancellations available within this time so check regularly if you would like an earlier test.
